Die-Closing Swager

Application

Torrington die-closing swaging machines are used to make reductions in diameter on rods, heavy tubes and parts such as aircraft control cable assemblies which cannot be reduced by feeding into a swager in the usual axial manner. The die closing machine enables work to be placed in the machine in a predetermined position. The dies, which rotate around the work, are moved in axially by hydraulically operated wedges.

Construction

These machines are the same as the regular Torrington Swagers as far as the adjustments for blow pressure and die opening are concerned. The only difference between the two machines is the addition of a wedge-operating mechanism with taper back dies. The two wedges are mounted opposite each other on the end of a wedge sleeve, which travels about 2 in. Adjustments for position can be done by collars installed on the rear of the wedge sleeve. The die opening can be made to accommodate different sizes of work. Replacement of wedges may be done quickly by removing the dies.

Operation

Torrington die-closing swaging machines function with a fully automatic duty cycle. Automatic control eliminates the possibility of damage to highly finished parts, such as ball terminals for control cables, that might be caused by improper operation or feeding of the work. The work is placed in position in the machine. Pressing the foot switch starts the automatic cycle. The dies partially close, the swager starts rotating, the wedges advance and close the dies, and the part is swaged. A timer-activated brake stops the swager, the wedges retract allowing the dies to open, and the swaged part is removed. The machine is now ready for recycling. Cycling techniques can be altered to suit individual customer requirements. The wedge sleeve is actuated by a hydraulic cylinder mounted at the rear of the machine.

A hydraulic power unit with a solenoid operated four way valve delivers the operating pressures. Each machine is equipped with an emergency stop button that will activate the swager brake and return the wedges to the rear position.

The die-closing swager may be changed over to operate as a standard rotary machine by removal of the wedges and installation of the suitable dies and backers. This gives the die closing swager the added flexibility of being capable of both die-closing and rotary operations. Hydraulic or mechanical feeds, mandrel assemblies, or inside stops can be used in conjunction with the die closing machines.
